This is a large city (ok, not as big as Shanghai but the biggest in Australia). We have several model shops. The one I get my stuff is Hobbyco, though I prefer to visit other stores, like Modeller's World in Chinatown, or Kellet's in Liverpool (Sydney West).
There is APMA and IPMS, I remember the guys from APMA as very friendly, however I don't attend to club meetings nor I have friends in the modeller's community (I'm not anti social, I'm more focused on modelling and improving my skills... I may join either organization later on...)
There are some hobby shows, the one I die to attend is the one held at Koonawarra, whic can be considered small, but I like it. There is a big one in Melbourne (Victoria) and another one held in Canberra (Australian Capital Territory. I'm unaware of other shows in other states.
There is a fair amount of great modellers here in Sydney, those doing armour are among the best. Obviously, Australian subjects have a strong presence on contests, so you get to see plenty of Spitfires, Beaufighters, Mustangs, Mirages in either scale.
There is an armor museum, I think it belongs to the Army, and is devoted to engineers. I've been there once however I'd love to visit again with my new camera.
There is also an aircraft museum at Bankstown Airport and it is quite good.
We also have Hyperscale being done by Mr. Brett Green, however I haven't had the chance to meet him yet.
In other fields, there are some interesting brands catering for Australian subjects but they are located outside Syndey (Red Roo, OzMods, High Planes, among others)
