Hi Dave,
I've just started painting my first super detailed project, the Tamiya 1/16
DAK Kübelwagen. I selected this kit for my first try as it is a relatively
'simple' vehicle even in 1:1.
First and most importantly is reference material. Without this you really
can't do to much super detailing. This was also the primary reason I
selected the Kübel as I have the WWP book, the MMiR Special other odds and
ends. Even better, I was able to contact two owners of 1:1 Kübels that were
very helpful. So much so that when I had a question, they often just went to
the garage and took a photo for me.
Detailing materials: Evergreen/Plastruct stuctural styrene, various gauges
of craft wire, bags of K&S scrap structural brass & aluminium, shim
(0.001"-0.005") brass, 0.010" & 0.015" sheet brass, and Coca-Cola can
aluminium.
Special Tools:
Calipers - I never used a caliper so much. Ideal for taking measurements off
the model.
Brass/PE Bender - A tool for bending brass like the Hold n' Fold. I made my
own or you can use a 4" door hinge

Micro Drills (#61-80)
Soldering Iron - for soldering brass pieces and for heating styrene for
bending
Jewellers Saw - excellent for cutting off parts while removing the least
amount of material.
Home Made - various one-of jigs to make several common parts.
CAD program - for drawing up and printing patterns for cutting brass parts
(I use TurboCAD)
Before I started modifying any parts, I sat down with the instructions and
references. I looked at each kit part and compared it to my references. If I
had no reference I'd start searching for one or ask those owning 1:1 Kübels.
I made lots and lots of notes so I'd minimize the chance of forgetting a
detail during construction.
As far as learning how, I just sat down and started doing it. Looked at each
part, or absense of detail, and thought about how to add the details or
build the absent details. But then again, I used to design and build 1:1
stuff when I had access to a garage. I'm doing the same thing, just smaller.

coloured styrene, its scratch built.
