So many great kits, so little time. I wish this was a top 20 instead of a top 5. I'm going to cheat a little bit with my answers:

1) Tamiya StuG III G / Panzer III L: I took the liberty to combine these two kits. Well done kits, extremely easy build, lot's of after market available, the options of what to build and color schemes are seemingly endless. I haven't built the DML Smart kits of these models yet so these Tamiya kits are still my favorites.

2) Trumpeter KV-1 / KV-2 series of tanks: Trumpeter covered a huge modeling hole with the introduction of their high quality KV tanks (there are about 10 different kits). Great detail AND value. These kits were going for $18 when they first came out. On the whole, I believe they are still about the least expensive kits you can buy. Each kit has plenty of options, including rubber band or link and length tracks. The upper run of the link and length tracks have very realistic sag molded in. The lower hull tub has individually molded sides that allow for great detail in this area. The included copper wire is the most realistic (and easiest to form) that I have ever seen. You get 2 great clear plastic light lenses. Unbelievable kits for the price.

3) Dragon T-34 series (all versions including SU-100 and SU-85M): The Tamiya series of T-34's had always been one of my favorites (despite their imperfections) until these babies came along. The first one to come out a few years back was the T-34/85 and it was love at first sight. At that time, the link to link tracks were a huge improvement in looks over the Tamiya kits' severely out-dated rubber band style tracks. Everything about the lower hulls were superior to Tamiya as well. Some of these kits are now available as Premium kits and they are chock full of "stuff". My one wish is that Dragon would come out with an SU-122, an ARV based on the this chasis and the more numerous early version SU-85.

4) Dragon King Tigers: All versions but especially the zimmerit versions on the "Production" and "Porsche" models. These models have the best molded on zimmerit I have ever seen. These boxes are heavy and packed with goodies. Once you open the box and look at all the stuff, you can never get it back in the box with the lid sitting correctly again.

5) Tamiya's KV tanks in 1/48th scale: I'm really becoming a big fan of this scale and have bought most of Tamiya's releases. Among these, the KV's are my favorite. The link and length tracks fit perfectly and look great. Even though many folks don't like the die-cast hull tubs, I really like the hefty feel they give the little tank.

My two cents. Thanks.

Tony Alvarez
