| Subject: | What Can We Do to Attract More Young Modelers? | |

As somewhat of a tangent from my earlier question, I'm wondering what
your thoughts are on how more young modelers can be brought into the
hobby. Face it, growing the consumer base is the only way we're going
to be able to ensure the future of this hobby.
I taught a weekly modeling class at my son's summer kid's club at school
last year. It was a mixed experience. We started with 15 kids, which
was too many, but a number switched into other activity groups after a
session or two, and a few more left after they completed their snap-tite
kits (kits which I had tried to politely discourage). I ended up with
about 8 kids, about half seriously working on models and the other half
prefering the screw-together diecast kits. I quickly discovered their
attention span is about a half hour. Unfortunately, this was a two hour
block of time. So I spent as much time cajoling and babysitting these
10 year olds as I did modeling with them.
I tried to promote a seven week parent/son modeling class through
community education last winter, but didn't get enough interest to make
a go of it.
My son, who started out with a strong interest, was seduced by the
Warhammer kits that are all the rage in his crowd. Between those and
the ever present Legos, I've got a lot of competition. And it won't be
long until he starts seriously looking at girls!
So I'm wondering what you guys think about this. How do we nuture the
new AFV modelers? Do we need a return of the motorized 1/35 kits? Do
we need R/C AFVs in this scale and at a lower price point than the 1/16
monsters to get kids interested?
Is there anything we can do collectively to mobilize ourselves,
manufacturers or the local hobby stores to promote the hobby?
