I believe there has to be interest in the subject before there is
interest in the model. I'm only speaking from my own experience growing up
1st) it was a love for tractors - my mom has said many times that I would
always point them out as we drove past them. 2nd) old war movies - loved
them. 3rd) playing Army not Cowboys and Indians mind you - ARMY- running
around with the Tommy gun and wearing anything green. Some of us had the
fortune of having some surplus gear to "accent our appearance whether it be
a helmet or pistol belt. 4th) My Dad built airplane models and one one day
(I think I was like 10) I talked him into buying and building a tank it was
the Testors (Italeri) M-47 and bought my 1st kit for me a Testors Willys
Jeep that came with a trailer and 2 guys - one holding a recoiless rifle.
Needless to say mine looked like crap, but I was hooked on AFV models. I
think I have built 1 model car and it was a snap-tite and a hand-full of
planes and ships. Nothing, however, could or can compare to the AFV model
because it reinforces my interest in the subject to begin with.
I don't think you want to cram and AFV down a kid's throat just like you
want to force him/her to take piano lessons - do you? I remember when I was
in summer camp they had a target shooting class - we got to shoot at paper
targets with B.B. guns. I distinctly remember that not everyone liked it
( some boys ) even though they signed up for it.
