Well from my limited experience (I live in Canada btw) I do not think the
hobby is in decline.

When I was building as a teen there was allot more stores (department, drug
store, chain hobby store) that carried kits but the selection of kits was
limited and forget aftermarket stuff.

Nowadays If I want super detailing or to just build a kit from outta the box
it is available to me. If I need reference it is there too.

We may have lost chain hobby stores up here (I think is was called
Leisurecraft) but it has been replaced by much better speciality stores. In
my area alone (west end Toronto) in less than 20 minutes I can drive to 6 to
10 stores that carry a decent selection (2 a great selection) of plastic
kits covering the gamut of the model building world. Sure some are better
stocked than others but most can get anything I want in and typically if I
can't get it from a local store (very rare) I can order it from Military
