Man, I totally agree with Peter on the lack of "point of purchase".
When I was growing up I got 99% of my models @ Ben Franklin's drug store in
Florida that I don't know if exists anymore. I'm talking paints and cement,
etc. too - no references. A DRUG STORE! I don't see that anymore either.
He's also right about toy stores - used to be that toy stores had a huge
model selection and it was sheer hell just trying to make up your mind what
to get. There isn't jack in the toy store now in the way of models. If you
want an AFV model today ,here in Nashville, you have to go to a hobby store
and hope that they carry AFV's 'cause most don't and the 2-3 that do have
the appearance of some kinda equal opportunity hobby store " we only have
AFV models here because the law says we have to." The employees are geared
towards the radio control off-road cars or trains. (sigh)

Major American model companies do suck unless you want to build cars or
planes or ships then I guess they're great. The only good (IMHO) model
magazine out of the USA is MMIR for me because it covers AFV's and figs. No
planes, trains, and automobiles thanks. Model Graphix's Armour Modelling -
I think that is the mag Peter is referring to - is totally awesome, yes it
is in Japanese - I'll get over it though.

Maybe be it is a generational thing. I just don't see how you can
suggestively influnce a child into liking something though. You just have
to be born liking it. When I was in elementary school, I loved to go to the
library and check out ALL the books on war and tanks and stuff. I'd take
them home and draw the guns and tanks and check these books out over and
over! The books had these cards that you had to sign and put in this pocket
on the inside of the book and my name was on it again and again. No one had
to explain to me that a Panzerfaust was not American - the book I read in
the 2nd grade did that for me. I read it because I wanted too as well. I
love Star Wars and science fiction toys which were just a prevalent in the
mid-late 70's and 80's as they are now - Shogun Warriors anyone? - but
W.W.2. and all it's little goodies were 1st and foremost.
