Hi Peter,

EXACTLY my thoughts!!!

Wow! I thought I am the only person who thinks like that. For a college
english writing class a few years ago, I actually wrote an essay discussing
the "Death of Scale Modelling in the USA."

Now, even though I live in the south bay, I don't go searching for models in
SF at all. It still is, to me a "tourist trap", meaning that I visit SF for
the sights and seafood! It is your home though! ;^)

I remember that as a kid back in Singapore, I used to have the notion that
the USA carries waaay more variety of model kits and cheaper too! Imagine my
suprise when I re-entered the hobby in '97! I was studying over at the
University of California Santa Barbara, and the whole area has only two very
small model stores. And that to get certain models, I actually have to
special order them!

Only when I returned to the Bay Area in '99 did I discover D&J and San
Antonio Hobbies. They actually had a lot more in stock back then than now!
Although the shelves are stocked fuller now, they carry more of the same
kits; they used to have alot more variety back then. Nowadays, they only
carry kits that sell. That means less and less DML. From this, I started to
see the disturbing trend. In fact, both hobby stores do not know whether
they are getting ANY DML catalogs at all for 2002. 3 months overdue now!

There is a sudden increase in Gundam and Tamiya mini racer stuff recently
though! Even Robotech too! But at the cost of AFV models.

I 100% agree with your assesment!

Cheers!
