Hi Jack
Why do you want to change the tracks?
The running gear is adequate for a late model M4A1, as far as I know. I imagine
it could use more bolts etc. The trailing arms are upswept, matching some M4A1
in pictures. You could replace the wheels with some that are not open spoked.
The turret is not bad, again, AFAIK.
The gun barrel is one of two egregious errors I know of. That stepped kind does
not exist. In fact, you have to be careful of what replacement barrel you get.
My review of the Elefant barrel points out that they must have copied the
Italeri one, because it has the same steps!! The second error is that the
antenna mount is the British type. I replaced it with a pin wrapped in wire,
which looks like the US style antenna mount.
I just finished building the Italeri kit of the M4A1. I used the tracks from my
M12 (the 3 bar tracks), added sand shield retaining strips ( I don't know what
else to call them!) from evergreen cut to size, and loaded the kit with mud and
gear. I used a 76mm brass barrel from the spares box. I have no idea what
company made it!
Overall, it's a nice kit, with good fit, and it looks like a Sherman!!
