Christophe,
I think that this is partially due to the "how do I make this look less
like a toy" phenomenon. This desire results in heavy weathering which gets
passed off as "scale effect" if overdone. I see this alot in model
airplanes with huge amounts of paint missing. I think that it has gotten
pretty bad, though. In the most recent FSM there's an aircraft with huge
paint chips on the bombs, fer gosh sake! Come on, bombs never have a chance
to get weathered, let along banged up enough to lose paint (at least not
until they're dropped).
At least with tanks and military vehicles, some degree of weathering is
warranted. Even so, tanks and other vehicles get regularly repainted,
usually when they're sent back to the depot for maintenance (about every
200-500 hours for allied stuff in WWII). Even late war German vehicles
weren't that heavily weathered - they didn't usually get the chance.
Now, one can argue that these vehicles get pretty abused in their short
life span. Remember, most campaigns in WWII lasted less than 2 years, and
most vehicles didn't last even that long. However, I grew up on a farm and
can speak from experience about agricultural implements. We had a Farmall
model M tractor there (1988) that was purchased in the late '40s. We never
washed or painted it, and rarely hosed it down. It was left outside under
an open-air shed for 40 years, aside from when we were using it (in all
weather). It was not particularly rusty and it had most of it's original
paint, except on the driver's seat, floorboards and control pedals. Even
there, the metal was mostly a dull gray color with silver highlights and
there was still considerable paint evident. Yes, there was surface rust
here and there, mostly on parts that got scratched only rarely. If a part
ran through brush on a regular basis, like the axle, scratches in the paint
didn't have a chance to build up rust patches. This was a 40 year old farm
vehicle, not a 4-6 month old tank!
Yes, tanks get muddy but the mud will fall off in a mile or two. Yes, they
get rain streaky but that too is obliterated by the next dusty road. Paint
does wear off, but it takes considerable time that these vehicles often
don't have. Also, paint gets put back on with regular maintenance if they
last long enough.
On the flip side, heavy weather looks neat and judges seem to like it
lately. So, I don't think we've seen the last of it anytime soon.
My $0.02,
Randy
