If the M1's stationed in Korea in 1994 are indicative of weathering
effects on "modern" armor, then even modern armor gets the bojangles
beat out of it. You could barely tell that the side skirts were ever
green on the bottom third or more thanks to those hot, humid,
monsoon-like Korean summers and cold snowy Korean winters turning them
into a dustish color. I also distinctly remember them beginning to turn
brownish near the skirt separation points where one skirt plate ended
and the next began for some reason. And unfortunately in places like
Korea where "official" supplies are hard to come by, the paint jobs
washed out pretty badly in spots as well, through no fault of the
crews'. My HMMV looked terrible, almost white in some spots when I first
got it. Had to resort to the Post Exchange purchased Krylon OD green,
brown and black spray paint for "touch-ups" due to the paint job just
slowly fading away and no sign or hope of a refurbishment during my
tour. Great, dependable truck though, got me out of a number of turtle
ditches and over some hills...
I guess my rambling, in short, means that in some cases the heavy
weathering is appropriate in my rather limited artistic opinion.
T-34-76's fighting in Leningrad or whatnot, where they literally rolled
off the assembly line and into combat down the road, were trashed in a
matter of days to weeks, if not shot down. So maybe context is the
key???
