Well, even if 12 years old a Mercedes is perhaps not the best reference.
Nowadays, steel used in cars is much better quality than any steel used 60
years ago - no matter if made for civillian or military use. Also there was
made an enourmous progress with paints and coatings, nowadays they are an
effective protection against water, wind, ice, sun etc. And Mercedes build
quiet expensive cars, taking care of paint, coat and steal quality.
Another idea: anyone knowledgeable about exact characteristics of steel used
for armour on tanks? Like how much carbon, chromium etc. it contains? This
also influences how quickly a piece of steel rusts, so we could make an
educated guess...
