Well, for one thing, the armor welds were stainless steel, 18% Cr, 8% Ni.
They don't rust at all.
American cast armor (1942): C .29, Mn 1.60, Ni .12, Cr .50, Mo .23
American cast armor (1944): C .29, Mn .98, Ni nil, Cr 2.70, Mo .46
Tiger I: C .50, Mn ?, Ni nil, Cr 2.50, Mo .60
Pz III: C .44, Mn ?, Ni traces, Cr 1.30, Mo .50
Czech, 50mm (I): C .49, Mn .74, Ni .55, Cr 1.52, Mo .31
Czech, 50mm (II): C.50, Mn 1.20, Ni .27, Cr 1.63, Mo .30
German, 30mm: C .48, Mn 1.06, Ni .06, Cr .77, Mo .33
Both sides modified their alloy compositions toward more Cr and less Ni as
the war went on, but it was never enough to really add any corrosion
resistance, which comes at around 15%, I think (???).
