I haven't looked at the "suggestions" for a while! Good point.

I also remembered your barrel reviews as a good example of clearly stated
review criteria. One potential problem is that setting criteria before doing
reviews can lead to giving "grades" that are too strict or too lenient. I think
you ran into that with your barrel reviews right?

I face this when marking exams or papers. Sometimes I'm looking for an answer
to a question, and a student gives a good answer to the question that isn't on
my marking key. Do they get a 0 then? Not usually, the marking key is somewhat
flexible. This works when marking 20 or 30 versions of the answer to the same
question. I suppose the way to make it work here is to go back through my
reviews, and see how to establish a uniform criterion.

With respect to my Panther review, I think my rating reflects the juxtaposition
of those very well engineered Panther A sprues with the not as well done
Panther D sprues. Does it reflect disappointment on my part? Yes, but not
because I've been waiting for a decent Panther D kit for years (heck, I've got
lots of other stuff to build); it was a reaction to the kit in the box. Again,
building the kit could revise that review up or down. Of course, I have to get
around to that! In the box it's a fine kit. But there is no way it deserves 4.5
or 5 stars IMHO.

Your comment about what would gain stars/points is a good one.

One thing Track-Link and Armorama offer us is reviews by users rather than by
site owners getting freebies. There's nothing wrong with those descriptions of
kits I read on certain other sites, it's just that I take them with a grain of
salt. I take a review more seriously from the guy/gal who spent the $25. A
personal bias I guess; perhaps because I don't get free kits!!
