James,
If a hobby,or any other endevor for that matter, is having an adverse effect on your human interactions I say dump it, drop it, avoid it, and move on to better things. Our lives are far too short to waste on things which will cause us deeper unhappyness. Our friends, family, and faith are the most important things we have while we're here.
On the other hand I've been building models since I was 10 years old. I'm married, have three children, many friends, and a good income as well as several other hobbies. I have had the pleasure meeting any number of hobbyists in similar situations so just being a modeling geek (like me) obviously won't preclude being social. At the same time I think that having time to ourselves (as opposed to isolating ourselves), however you get it, is important and helps keep us sane (more or less;-).
I've never thought that model building has any real redeaming value save that I enjoy it and all the peripheral things related to it. It is after all just a hobby not a "lifestyle".

Mark
(Man, am I getting preachy in my old age or what?!?)
