Actually, there are probably several redeeming values to the hobby -- aside from keeping it afloat with our hard earned cash!
A model kit is a puzzle really. We have an outline on how to put the pieces together, but we need to think it through and figure out how and when and what to paint. If we get into detailing a kit we often do some additional research and have more questions to answer. There is a good deal of mental activity involved here as we learn more about a vehicle and its plastic or resin counterpart. We also develop greater manual dexterity, espcially when we start adding photoetch to the mix.
We tend to know more about the military, political and social history surrounding the era of the models we build. Our views of the current world may be shaped by our understanding and perspective of the conflicts represented by our models.
We may also be more personally fulfilled, whether we consider ourselves "builders" or "artists," than people who are workaholics or have no hobby.
