Hi James,

I think anything can become an unhealthy fixation if one is prone to certain
behaviours. Luckily this pursuit is not as harmful as over-drinking or
substance abuse (even though glues and paints can be bad for you).

If you find that your hobby is troubling you it's not a matter of dumping
it, but finding out why it is troubling you. If you kicked this habit, would
you find another?

There's no harm in being a real enthusiast. Distractions can be good for a
person no matter what they are. We need to calm down and focus on the jobs
on our workbenches. It feels good, doesn't it? It's a matter of fitting it
in with the rest of our lives.

What's funny is that it seems to be OK in this society to obsess over a
career. Yes, it does provide an income and all that, but is that all there
is? Hobbies take our sensibilities to another level and one that few of us
get paid for. So, why not exercise that as a volunteer?

I'm curious about how you would define a healthy life. Stress is becoming a
workplace hazard and if you approach model building a certain way it can be
a very important part of a healthy life along with diet, exercise, rest, and
all that stuff.

Model building is a solitary activity. I've heard of people getting together
for group building sessions. Joining or starting a model club or even
meeting over coffee with like-minded individuals can be fun and sociable.
Check your local hobby shop to see if there are club or meeting postings.
There was an excellent hobby shop here that had a coffee pot and table and
chairs for anyone who wanted to sit and chat. Of course Track-Link is a
great meeting place for people from all over the world.

As far as finished product is concerned, perhaps the process of building and
finishing models is more important to you than the end product. If that's
the case, you can give away, sell or donate your models to appreciative
individuals or organizations. It'll give you the space you need to refresh
and improve your collection. If we ended up finishing all the models we have
stored I bet few of us would have the space to properly display them without
causing a fracas in the household.

The secret is to suit yourself within the boundaries that you make for
yourself. No one can answer the question for you of whether you should dump
the hobby or not. I often go through adjustment periods and examine if what
I'm doing is rewarding or too costly and I try modify my behaviour
accordingly. It's all part of the balancing act.

Good luck,

Ed
