My point of view ....
I have some hobbies .......the biggest is modelling .
I love to build kits , paint figures , and I think I never could stop doing
this.
But making kits is not my only hobby . I love to play my Playstation 2 and
my Gamecube.
I love to drive my turbo car .....the sound of the garret turbine is music
to my ears .
I love to talk on the ICQ , love to see movies , listening to music ,dvd,
enjoying my home theater ......
I do all this and more , but never forgetting that plastic models is my
primary objective of fun ( girls aside , please)
I make around 5 kits per year , and that's enuff for me ... I spend 2 months
on a model , hyperdetailing , painting weathering , baby steps .....
When I get tired ........gamecube..........girlfriend ......friends....(not
in that order , hehe ....)
so relax , enjoy the gift of modelling , whe are artists !
Regards
Julian

> I sympathize with your dilemma. Modeling can be addictive, particularly
if other aspects of your life are lacking and you find your greatest
enjoyment is building kits. You're probably using it as an outlet for your
artistic energies. If you were finding more fulfillment with your career,
you might have less of a need to model. If you gave up modeling right now
you might be even more frustrated, or then again, you might be more
compelled to concentrate on your career, especially as it pertains to
building models for films. However, you are probably sharpening your skills
working on AFV kits, which would be an asset professionally.

unemployment. In my previous job, I wasn't very challenged (marketing and
employee communications), and I did a lot of modeling at home when I could.
I typically built a major diorama each year incorporating three to six kits
and several dozen figures. I'd model 20+ hours a week. During my recent
year "off" I built only three kits and a handful of figures, and didn't get
very far into my latest diorama. I didn't have as strong of a need to model
because I was doing other things -- looking for work, spending more time
with family, remodeling a major portion of our basement, learning web design
and other software programs, building a web site, etc. My creative needs
were being met in other ways, and so modeling was less of a focus. We'll
see what happens with the new job!

> I'd think most counselors (professional or otherwise) would agree that
having a hobby is beneficial, so I'm surprised that someone (unless they
themselves don't have a hobby or look down on modeling) would suggest giving
it up. Some form of self-discipline might be helpful. You might consider
limiting the amount of time you model, or don't buy any new kits until you
finish the ones you have. Or reward time you spend on improving your career
prospects with a new kit. As others have said, balance is the key to
anything in life.
