This practice is very rampant in the anime modeling industry for nearly all kits are recasts of the originals.

In fact, the only way to get the originals is to fly to the exhibition shows in Japan and hope you have $5,000 USD and can buy the originals before they are all sold out.

So what happens is that recasters with lots of cash buy all the orignal kits they can get their hands on and then make master molds, and then recast like crazy. Often times, the recasts are 98% as good as the originals for a fraction of the cost. Originals can cost up to $300 USD.

So that means anyone who has brought from a recast anime store is indeed paying for theft.

I'm beginning to see theft in the Emergency Medical Services modeling community too. Someone would take a kit, make a few adjustments, and sell it. But hey, those plastic EMS kits have been OOP for so long and many of the companies croaked or were bought over anyway.

I'm not endorsing theft but it's more common than most believe and the (sad) thing is stealing works and pays big bucks to the thieves.
