are not fly-by-night operations (I'm making an assumption here and we all
know where that often leads!) but legitimate businesses that manufacture,
import, and distribute this stuff. Why, if it is a copyright violation, has
nothing been done to stop them, here in the US? Tamiya has a fair sized
operation herein a very high rent district, I assume (that word again!) they
have a lawyer, at least on retainer, why have they done nothing? Clearly, it
can't be legal to import bootleg material or we would have bootleg Porsches
coming in on the next cargo ship. Second, if Tamiya, or any manufacturer
sold the rights to Trumpeter to produce less expensive, sometimes even
better, licensed copies would they tell us about it? I don't think it would
be in their best interest to announce that someone else was going to make
their kit cheaper than they did, kind of ruins their whole pricing strategy
doesn't it?
Very interesting points. Although nothing may be possible in China, US
Customs, the FBI, and various state and US attorneys have readily acted to
seize knock-off imports, even of such mundane things as T-shirts. It is not
even an issue of money for Tamiya. All they have to do is show verifiable
proof of copyright infringement by Trumpeter, Academy, or whomever and the
Government will assume the cost of prosecution, as they do for all crimes.
Hell, did they even tell their Congressman about it?
Perhaps someone in the "model media" should ask Tamiya America for a direct
answer to the question: "Does Tamiya or Tamiya America consider these kits:
[give a list] to be illegal copies or infringements of their copyrights, and
if so, what are they doing about it?" My guess is that the question would
not be answered and the questioner's publication would be cut off from
review samples, passes to TamiyaCon, ad revenue, and so forth. . .
Yes, something fishy indeed. . .
