Dear new digi camera buyer!
My personal opinion , get a model with a good MACRO
function for close up shots and if possible, one which could allow the camera/ lens to swerve independently, its great for those tight angle shots and very near distance. I have used a Sony DSC-S30 model ( quite old ) to photograph a diorama
depicting a street fighting scene which owner won a grand prize at the PACHi contest by Tamiya.
higher pixels are fine but need not be extreme, typically 1.3megapix -3.2 would suffice. If printing is required then higher is better. you could dispense with the flash and as I have said, getting near to the models/dioramas and catching the 'action' is very important....
