| Subject: | How to Review Resin Figures? | |
| Date: | Jan 7, 2003 |
| From: | Peter Ong | |
Now that I have some time to do some modeling, I'm planning on writing up at least three "construction" reviews on resin figures for TL.
All my figure "construction" reviews are on plastic figures and my recent reviews on resin figures are all "inbox." Therefore, this will be my first resin figure construction reviews.
(Note: I built VP's 120mm Soldier 2000 a while back and the fit and detail were excellent...a perfect kit almost. I hardly needed any putty. As such, when I'm building these three resin figure kits, I compare them to my "great experience" with the Soldier 2000. Now, am I being fair?).
So my question is: How should I judge/ rate a resin figure using the TL "star system?"
* Is puttying ALWAYS necessary for resin figures? All three figures require putty to fill the gaps so should I deduct stars for puttying?
* How should I rate the fit? (For one figure, I sanded the pour block down to the actual piece only to find I needed to move the arm 1mm off the torso to get the hands lined up. But once moved, the fit is fine. So was it my fault to sand down the pour block remnants or was it the kit's fault that once sanded to the original piece, the fit is off?).
* Does detail and casting take precedence over fit? Some modelers say so whereas others say the opposite. Some modelers say one can usually get the fit corrected but not the detail. Others say who cares if the figure fits well but looks flat.
I know these figures won't get five-stars but I'm unsure if I should go as low as three stars because I just don't know if the problems I had were my fault or the kit's fault. After all, the box photos show the fit works well. Right now, all three resin figures look fine and with some time and putty, all fit and all gaps are covered...but they did take a lot of time to "get it right."
Any advice appreciated. I don't want to Deep-Six a kit just because I have a false fantasy "notion" of what the ideal resin kit should be in terms of fit, looks, details, and construction.
TIA,
Peter |
