| Subject: | Collecting is passive, modeling is engaging | |

Pete, I feel particularly qualified to respond to your post as I'm both a modeler and a collector.
I've had a life-long fascination with construction equipment, but beyond playing with toy tractors as a kid, I never pursued my interests. About five years ago, a friend gave me an inexpensive diecast model of a bulldozer for my birthday, and it sparked a new interest in collecting those models, which range in price from $15 into the thousands of dollars (for the limited-run, high-end stuff). I've since accumulated more diecast models than I care to admit.
Despite my interest in collecting, I've been in a funk recently, realizing that I don't have the room to display my entire diecast collection, and don't expect to for several years. And even then, displaying any large collection quickly turns a den into something closer to a museum. Not a bad thing, but not the kind of room every family can accomodate or tolerate!
Anyway...I've come to realize that collecting is a "passive" hobby. There's nothing challenging about simply buying a model and putting it on a shelf to display. Yea, there's the "thrill of the hunt," but once a highly coveted item is in your collection, then what? You see, acquiring collectibles doesn't engage a collector in the same way that other hobbies do, which I think is the advantage that plastic modelers have over collectors -- we actually DO something with our models. We're intimately familiar with them by the time they hit the shelf. They're a reflection of our interests, talents, and skills. I can't say the same for that diecast Komatsu D155AX dozer sitting behind me right now. My interaction with it was limited to my buying it and taking it out of the box.
The problem is, I can't stop collecting! As "passive" as those darn models are, I really enjoy them! |
