Subject:  Re: Steel Wheeled, Night-Fighting JagdpantherList thread.

 Date:  May 17, 2003
 From:  Gerald Owens
According to Walter Spielberger, the Panther reverted to rubber-tired road wheels after fewer than a hundred steel-wheeled vehicles were prodeuced because the steel wheels were too harsh for the hollow guide teeth on the Panther track (too many breakages). It was intended to reintroduce the steel wheels after a new track was developed, which of course, never happened. The projected new track was to have a single center guide tooth on alternate links. Jagdpanthers never used the steel wheels, but might have, had the war continued and the new track been introduced.
