| Subject: | Yes, Enough Ranting From Me! My Final Spiel. | |
| Date: | Jun 11, 2003 |
| From: | Peter Ong | |
Talking with modelers and those who make models over the past years have enlightened me to the point that there'll always be swabbling and ramblings and rantings.
My main point is who is to blame and who can solve the problem?
****
The recent row is the price of the Tamiya Humvee (besides the research issue...I already addressed that) of which we have modelers saying this to each other:
1) Stop whining!
2) Don't buy it then!
3) Put up and shut up!
4) Oh, you "Holier than Thou" modeler!
But if these modelers look at the "global" holistic issue from corporate HQ, AMPS, hobby store owners, and businessmen, we know that the U.S. has no importer for...about a year? Is it the consumers' responsibility to get out and build an importer? No, it's the companies. So we modelers may swabble and moan amongst ourselves telling who to shut up about high prices, but I don't think doing so will make another U.S. distributor spring up overnight to solve the problem. It's not our job and yet we're affected by this lack of a U.S. distributor. (Case in point, has anyone in the U.S. seen the Tamiya Humvee yet? I got mine two weeks ago from Taiwan. Sooner if I overnighted it).

I also hate to say this, but I say it's the responsiblity of AMPS, the online webstores, and the modeling magazines to address such issues as price hikes, lack of distributors, toxic modeling supplies and so forth that threaten armor modeling to extinction. (Even the poor economy has hurt all of these businesses). These are the companies/ organizations that support, promote, and preserve the modeling hobby and it should be up to them (who have the power and get listened to) to politely tell the model and supply companies these issues, not I, Peter Ong, to go kicking down company doors in my usual kiddie temper-tantrum fashion to bring attention to these topics.
If these organizations do not address these issues, then enthropy might set in and then so long organizations, magazines, and businesses (or they'll have to adapt and talk and sell planes instead!).

And to be fair, I give DML credit for paying Chenowth Racing so much research $ to try to make the DPV. Too bad it didn't work out, and even if it did, I wouldn't release a DPV nowadays, not in this poor economy. The advantage of hindsight: I wonder why, if DML paid so much to Chenowth, why can't DML push the research through with them? Money talks! What did DML get out of that grand lump-sum of money...just one prototype? I don't know the full story but I say Chenowth owes DML a favor because in America, money talks and money spent is POWER!

OK, I'm packing up my soapbox since I said WAY too much on this topic :-).
I say when it comes to price hikes, we're all correct from Christophe to Peter Gay. There isn't ONLY ONE right answer, nor ONLY ONE reason for the price hikes.
