Hello Andrew,
i think yes, the exhaust was really near the engine on many tanks. Maybe twenty years ago i change the first part of my old ford capri,that part go straight into engine(3L english model)don`t know the english name for that part. That piece was paintet and when i start engine again the paint burned out in a few minutes. Fact is, i don`t know it but i think it was allways the same on tanks with exhaust that neer to the engine.
