Dear Hartmut
Distance from the exhaust manifold may be an important point. Burning fossil fuels releases some SO2 and NO2 which with water can generate some sulphuric and nitric acids. The concentration of these aggressive acids is probably highest nearest the engine. Attacking the metal with acids must increase its susceptiblity to further oxidation (rust)
If anyone has just bought a new car could they monitor the state of their exhaust manifold and pipe over the coming months?!!
