Subject:  Re: Should exhaust pipes always be orange?List thread.

The exhaust goes through the inside of the pipe, which is usually black
from unburnt carbon, and the pipe carries the acid vapors away from the
engine so that the tip of the pipe should be the part visible that is
most effected - unless you model a pipe with a corrosion or bullet hole
in it.

The issue seems to be whether WW II era exhaust pipes were made from the
same alloys as modern pipes. If so, a short trip to a construction site
will answer the question. 'Dozers and Graders run frequently yet sit
exposed for days and weeks at a time. To the best of my memory, all the
pipes I've ever seen are more brown, grey, black, or "burnt metal" than
orange. All the tracks more metallic dull grey or dull grey-brown, when
not covered in dirt, than rust. I'm certain I've never seen pipes or
tracks as vividly orange as frequently appear in model mags.
