Some food for thought,
Having worked on modern armoured vehicles, here are a few thoughts, Armoured steel, where exposed will rust as long as it is not disturbed, areas most likely to rust the quickest are around weld joints and most fitting places, Exhausts, although most modern military vehicles run on diesel, the exhaust will go orange, although in modern days they are not allowed to stay that way, however when out in the field they are not touched. I doubt very much that any tank crew in war is going to stand around cleaning rust off, it just wouldn't happen and is not part of the normal servicing of a tank, checking oil water fuel and greasing all points definately but cleaning rust off!!. Modern day tracks come already coated, usually in black, this wears off very quickly where the tracks rub together and where the wheels and sprocket touch, once exposed the metal will rust in hours to a nice orange colour, it is only surface rust, and will wear off as soon as the vehicle is moved. Bear in mind also that modern exhaust systems are made from Galvanised steel, not so on military vehicles,
Just something to think about,
Simon. |
