I'm not sure there are ANY T-34 experts. But no hull changes are required to use the Armo turret. By the way, the gun type is L-11 -- not F-11 as I wrote earlier. Never was good with the alphabet, I guess. Anyway, Steve Zaloga, in his Osprey book gives late spring of 1941 as the start of T-34 cast turret production. However, the AJaKS T-34 book has a drawing of a "Model 1940", w/ cast turret and L-11 gun, from the winter of '40/41 production at Factory 183. Armo seems to agree with Zaloga on cast turret production dates. Anyway, the Armo turret, regardless of date, is appropriate for the Dragon 1940 hull. The AJaKS books also shows the / later F-34 gun, in both cast and welded turrets, fitted to a "1940 style" hull (early driver's hatch, two headlights, rectangular rear engine hatch). There are a fair number of photos of these also, all that I've seen are noted as "1941" models.
So, with the Dragon hull assembly, you could use the kit turret (L-11 gun) for a 1940, the Armo cast turret (L-11) for a 1940/41 model (your choice); or either Tamiya cast turret (F-34 gun) from their T-34 1942 kit, or Italeri welded turret (F-34) from their 1942 kit, for a T-34 1941 model. All of these can be documented from photos. And all have the early hull features of the Dragon kit. The only differences are in stowage. The jacks seem to have been deleted very quickly, and the early style external fuel "boxes" followed soon after.
My own opinion is that the cast turret appeared just shortly before the introduction of the improved F-34 gun. Consequently, there seem to have been relatively few of the cast turrets built with the early L-11 gun. Incidentally, the AJaKS Model Fan Encyclopaedia #5 "T-34, Stalin's Warhorse", and #6 "T-34 in combat", have excellent drawings showing the T-34's evolution, for each production plant, and approximate dates of manufacture. After looking at these, I think almost any sort of early/late mix-n-match T-34 is possible (except MAYBE an 85 mm turret on a 1940 hull).
Good luck,
Paul Gibson |
