| Subject: | Re: German WWII "Firebase" idea??? | |

What I've read from both the Eastern Front in Russia and in northern Finland (very nice dense, dark scary forests :O ) there was a tendency to build outposts from which soldiers then patrolled the surrounding area, and if the enemy decided to attack, the fighting included getting from those outposts into fighting. In Finland it was difficult because of the forests (for the germans in particular) but in Russia the firebase/outpost -method was easier, as there was better visibility. But so was it easier for the enemy to employ tanks and cossacks in their raids.
In a hedgehog-position you'd probably expect to find LMGs, quite possibly a few ATGs and even some mortars. Infantry of course, too. In Russia you could use flak and maybe even a howitzer in direct fire setting.
If you want a Vietnamish diorama, model a few germans getting scared in a Finnish forest. They didn't like forest at all at first, so they weren't too effective at first. Their loads of equipment on their back didn't help it either.
Hope this brings some light into the subject. |
