I think he just wants some fun numbers to play around with in his stats course. When I took stats we always collected numbers like this. The survey wouldn't be much use because it is a voluntary sample and categories should not be used, rather the modeller should just list their favourites and the statistician should do the work of organizing them.

The best method for getting good who builds what type data is the sales figures from the various model distributors.
