I use a Nikon D1X which is pretty expensive (understatement). On the other hand it enables me to use all my old Nikkor lenses, even manual focus ones.
I think if you serious about photography and can afford it, you'd better get an SLR with separate lens(es), now the low end digital SLR cameras are more reasonably priced, such as the Nikon D70 and Canon EOS 300D.
