I feel sorry for you...
I think people should only ask for scans when the magazine is not available anymore (i.e. a long out of print 1986 article for instance), otherwise if that mag/book is so precious for them why don't they try to buy it? Some people give all kind of excuses, that they have no money, on a student budget, etc... Yet I'm sure they happily spend much more on other non essential, non modelling related things...
Also people expect you spend your time and money to help them, but seldom thank you or ever give anything back to the modelling community. This is maybe a minority but they do spoil your day :-(
