Some solutions:
1.) Use dry transfers instead! No need for gloss coats! Aircraft modelers are now getting into the idea with the advent of Hobby Decals out of Korea, which is producing a line of a/c stencil sets as dry transfers.
2.) Gloss coat the entire model. This will give you a consistent finish after final matte coat. I do this sometimes even with dry transfers. My typical system may be: 1.camo finish, 2.dry transfers, 3.'filters', 4.pastel chalks, 5.gloss coat, 6.oil & turpenoid washes, 7.matte coat.
3.) I haven't tried this one myself, but I have read of others doing this: wet set the decals with cleat matte coat. They paint the area receiving the deal with matte paint then set the decal in the still wet paint. The paint keeps the air bubbles from forming under the decal. Note: this one worries me a little. If I was going to use this method, I would probably trim all clear film from around your decals to guard against silvering.
Try a couple on some scrap, I am sure you can make it work! |
