Apologies as this is slightly off-topic, but I bought a 'Portable Studio' from Maplins ( http://www.maplin.co.uk/ ) and it seems to be a fairly economic aid to photographing models.
I estimate the maximum size of subject is 15" x 15" (40cm x 40cm) and offers a choice of soft lighting by folding various sections, the whole thing folds flat(ish) into a square package.
It's item number 'A03BL' and costs £14.99, I assume it's available in Maplin stores too.
