| Subject: | Two types of AMS | |

You = anybody, not specifically "you!"
Ah, yes, AMS is something one can or cannot win. AMS = $$$, plain and simple. In a nutshell to win it, one has to spend $$$. If one cannot win, then frustration sets in. My solution...withdraw from the model and AMS myself. I don't AMS any model I don't care to AMS.
There are actually two types of AMS...AMS for YOU and AMS for the model. AMS for YOU is tools and supplies, AMS for the MODEL is PE and the resin. Tools can always transfer over to other modeling interests and other models, PE and resin are locked into that specific model.
I think we all have some AMS in us. Who doesn't see their ultimate goal of buying an airbrush and an air compressor? Who doesn't see themselves using a digital camera to take photos of models? Who doesn't want to have $600 Photoshop to tweak model photos? And who doesn't buy books to help in modeling? All of these contribute to AMS...to make models look as nice as possible.
On the flip side...
Two years ago I never even considered buying PE and resin for models. Why spend extra money? Now I see the benefits PE and resin give in the appearance of a plastic model and I do buy PE and resin sometimes. Who doesn't want custom aftermarket decals? After all, chances are that I only will have one kit of that type. I do not wish to make seven M2A2s.
When it comes to AMS, really ask yourself, "What do *I* (i.e.: you) want?" You'd be surprised with the answers that pop into your head.
I find the older I get, my modeling interests have changed. I never was much into collections, but I do want ORIGINALS; I want to show IDEAS.
To pursue AMS, one has to consider: "Is it worth it?" Spend $100 on tricking out a Sherman...why I can get an awesome and accurate 200+ part 1/100 EX-S Gundam for that price! See, this is the idea conflict at work. Some choose the $100 Sherman; others choose the $100 "bigger bang for the buck to make that big bang."
AMS...all about money; it's all about money. Think about it since models are worth a lot in PERSONAL value, but what may be worth $1,000 to me is worth $100 to you. What is that model worth to you? How far would you go to show that AFV or that idea? Do you pursue the AFV, or do you pursue ideas to use for that AFV?
My solution is to ask myself, "Where do I "want to go?" What do I want to show?" Unfortunately, my answer is no longer figures or AFVs, which is why I post less and less on AFV DGs.
My advice is simple and cliche: NEVER lose sight of the forest for the trees. I LIKE modeling, BUT modeling is NOT ENTIRELY AFV. Like two sides to AMS, ask yourself if you like modeling (the "forest") or you like AFVs so much (the "trees") that it controls your modeling. I choose the former. Are you an artist after artistic expression, or an artist that strives for the best still-life representation? Can you mix and balance the two? What type of artist are you?
If you like the "tree" more, then yes, AMS for the model is fine since you wish to make an accurate "tree." If you like the "forest" more, then AMS is for the diorama or for some idea in your head (this figure's James Bond looking at a passing lady! Who cares about Bond's suit color, or his shoes, or his belt buckle? I'm after the idea, not to show off Bond), and that's tools, supplies, skills and ideas. Never lose sight of one or the other.
