I concur that "in-box","in-bag", reviews are useful to some degree,(I perhaps should have phrased that better in my original post) - the ability to see the contents, if in a limited way, is a nice thing. I do feel that a closer examination of the parts is different than seeing shots of sprues on my computer screen. One thing I will say is that not all "in-box" reviewers are not of equal skill and insight. But I feel the recommendation to the public to buy the kit on the basis of a in-box review may lead to regret on the part of the reviewer, once the reviewer actually gets their teeth into a build. Recommendations, yay or nay, should,(IMHO) only come with build reviews.
And yes some builders are more skilled at building than others- that actually amplifies my point.
With no false modesty I feel I can say that I have some co-ordination and experience with model building,(difficult ones as well), and from my actual hands on experience I would not recommend this Alan Bison kit in any way to a "Newbie" or youngster- it would only lead to frustration on their part- and who knows maybe they would never build another kit!- That is an extreme example but a real one. Also -many people are very busy in their work life and other areas of their responiblities to spend a lot of time researching a subject or kit so sometimes these "in-bag" reviews are the only information they recieve- kinda thin info really.
Buying a kit from the info provided in the average 2 or three paragraph in-box review is like buying a car without starting it up and going for a drive.
Frank in your example-the moment you started gluing those pieces together it ceased being a in-box review, and became a build review,(if only a half hearted one) ;)
Hey I don't mean to dis anyone's efforts to put out info- it's just the old saying of Buyer Beware still holds.
Anyone remember the anticipation of the Karl from Dragon and the Leopold- I had both of those kits and I bought them on recomendation but I learned a good lesson and now I think waiting till a few people have built a new release and shared their experience may be wise.
And to revisit the idea that one builder may be happy with a kit and one may not, I agree, that some people are better (or luckier?!) than others at putting a kit together however - another facet may be different people have different levels of expectation and need of accurate detail. One person may be happy with the level of detail on the DML Leopold, (I wasn't) while someone may want to put in the extra time and effort to do a more accurate Trumpeter version.
