Hi,

German WWII superiority is a self-perpetuating myth! It is a myth that us history Geeks create, that big companies like Tamiya/DML read as "consumer demand", and that the media exploits as "truth".

Look at the history channel shows about the Tiger. Compare that with shows about the T-34 or Sherman. Notice that the show about the Tiger had almost nothing bad to say about the tank, and the interviews with Allied veterans build the case about the Tiger being a German wonder weapon. And then we have the "reenactment" of Michael Wittman's drive through Villers Bocage (which was presented as a historical fact by the History Channel but is currently under debate regarding historical accuracies).

People love to see shows about wonder weapons, and the History Channel provides that.

Imagine some thirteen year old kid seeing the show. Or how about some history ignorant individual. They will take what they see as "truth" and form opinions. I started modelling as an impressionable college kid, and my first fantasy was to model Wittman's ride through Villers Bocage.

Look at the shows about the Sherman, or T-34. Did the History Channel talk about how a Sherman Firefly knocked out Wittman's last ride? Or how about the incredible modular design of the Sherman with interchangeble suspension bogeys and all the multiple engines used by it over the entire production run?

How about the T-34's incredible combat debut against the Germans with the lone tank wandering through the German line on a rampage (like Villers Bocage) before a well aimed shot ended the carnage? How about the evolution from the T-34 to the well known T-55?

How about a show about the Centurion MBT? Tank commander Tzvika Greengold's lone ride in the Golan Heights and single handedly delaying the Syrian advance over the course of three (?) days?

Nope.

This myth of German superiority perpetuates in TV viewers and therefore the consumer who buy model kits demand more German stuff. When the Tiger and Panther and Panzer market gets saturated, the companies resort to producing obscure prototypes or even repeating the same subject with new features just to further exploit the market.

IF I own a mainstream model company, I would do the same. Hey, it means more profit for my company!

Okay, sorry for the long rant. But this thread is so interesting.

Cheers!
