 Subject:  British IR systems...List thread.

Hi,

Ah! Another myth... Regarding IR sets, I found some interesting tidbits while researching for an IR Panther I wanted to build.

The British did have an IR system. In fact, it was developed for use in North Africa waaay back before the Panther mounted IR's were developed. The British system was called "Tabby" and IIRC more than 10,000 units were developed. They were brought to the ETO where they were stored in the event the Germans use their own IR. The Germans never used their IR sets in quantity and therefore the British (also the Americans) never used theirs.

IIRC the Soviets may have their own IR technology too.

German IR may be high quality, but also difficult to deploy because they know the British and American all have IR transceivers that can catch them. You know, the big UHU beam is not invisible in other spectrums and with the right equipment (Tabby) becomes a lighthouse for all to see.

Cheers!
