In fact, I have yet to hear of a major online store closing its doors.

The only one I know of is the then-famous Hobbyweb in Milpitas, CA, then run by an Asian family. The son, around 20-something seemed like the boss, the image scanner was the dad, and the sister(s), or mom, or aunt were the packers. An uncle was across the Bay in Oakland in the warehouse (must be the container ship receiving site). They never had a store...just a garage-type warehouse. I think they closed because the family either didn't want to do it anymore, too stressful, or one family member's health problems. I ordered and picked up in person from them a few times...good service...but then again I lived close by. But being into the business, I'm not surprised if they started another business type. I remember my former coworker joked that that son probably made more than both of us combined in a year. Not surprising, although I didn't see what car he drove. If BMW, Mercedes, or Lexus (and kid you not), that's proof enough. Back in 1996, who imported lots of kits and books from Asia to sell here? Not like today...

And we all seen the growing pains of GreatModels and HLJ. I wonder how much of their business is domestic and how much international. At the top of the toy store scale, pricey and upscale FAO Schwarz filed for bankrupty and closed its San Francisco downtown shopping area flagship store. But they're going to open one in a huge Las Vegas mall, ironically enough. I saw this with my own eyes.
