Hi Charby;

I have heard this arguement so often about the "wonder weapons" and hoe the war may have turned out differently had they not expended so much time and money developing them. A valid point perhaps, but it overlooks the natural progression of technology and the fact that there was an arms race going on anyways. So had the time and effort not been expended developing and improving the arsenal of any nation in the conflict that nation would quickly have found themselves vastly outdated and ineffective and therefore totally outclassed on any battlefield.
I beg to correct that while standard allied doctrine at the time allowed for the destruction of four to five Shermans to every Tiger, it only took one to knock a Tiger out. As the Allies were on the offensive at the time and as we all know, the attacker always suffers higher casualty rates, and the smart planner allows for this and prepares for it, the actual fact was the losses were less than that. Combined operations are the mainstay of any army and we cannot forget that the Germans also practised this. German arty was very precise and effective, and while the Allies ensured there was air superiority over France and the Low countries, the Luftwaffe still existed and flew many ground attack sorties in a wide variety of aircraft.
It's not that I want to start a disagreement here about the facts, but it seems that we as modellers place a mystique on all German armour and underrate our own achievements.
The Sherman certainly deserves it's recognition as the most versataile tank of the war ( along with the T-34 ) and has a genuine case for "Best Tank" due to it's reliability and adaptability but I think that overall if we are looking at overall competence and influence I would cast my vote with the Comet or the Centurion. And if we were to include Russian designs I would go with the JS series, the 3 in particular, as it's fundimental design and shape still form the basis of Russian armour to this day.
