Eric,

I have seen locks, often secured by a chain (more etched metal), on a good
number of German half-tracks, on the external stowage bins including photos
of vehicles destroyed in combat. From the photos I've seen these bins
tended to contain items like blankets and other personal effects which
wouldn't be used in a fire-fight. Some vehicles had simpler chain and pin
systems. Apart from security, these locks would also stop the bins flying
open on rough terrain.

I haven't seen the same level of locks on stowed items which were inside the
fighting compartment and tended to have a high ratio of items the crew would
need in a firefight eg ammo, MP40, fire extinguisher.

Cheers

Neville
