I have a 2.0 M megapixel, 3 x manual zoom (Nikon Finepix 2200, 129€ Euros, bought in August), and I can focus with no problem a Stuart or Hetzer 1/35 model to fill a frame (no detailed views). I am not an expert, and I have never posted any pictures so far, but in my computer they look alright. The more megapixels, the better resolution, so theoretically, if you want to make prints or enlargements, you should look for a better camera (a colleague has just bought a 5.0 M for 250 €). I would buy some normal stuff (like mine), and in a few months you should know what you want... and the camera will cost you half the money.
I can send you a couple of images, if you want.
I hope this helps you somehow.
