I too did not know much about digital cameras, until it was explained to me that you want to look for two things. High Megapixels and something called Macro function(which allows you to take pics up to 10 cenimeters close up with full clarity). Do a search on Canon cameras and look for a Canon A310. This model is moderately priced and you can pretty much take a pic of the tip of a match-stick when you use the Macro function. The Canon site also has, for each camera, a couple of pics to show what it is capable of.
