You are right, this one is debated all the time!

It really matters which organization is putting on the show. IPMS judging really attacks the construction: no glue marks, consistent painting, roadwheels on straight, nothing wrong with the markings, etc. And usually that alone is enough to rank the models. Only if the model are really equal does "appeal" or difficulty come into it.

For AMPS judging, there is a score sheet and construction, accuracy, appeal all come into it. I prefer this one, both in intent and the fact there is feedback given!

However, as Jim mentioned, it still comes down to people judging and it is very likely the same models would be judged and awarded completely differently at two different shows. Different people like different things so you can't really worry about it if you take your models to shows.

Now as a observation, to really wow a crowd takes something special. Large is always a crowd favorite, especially if the detail is up to the task. Something diffrent from the rest of the crowd - seeing a table of 24 Tigers makes it tough to pick one out. Building something not currently kitted from scratch is always attractive, but takes a lot more work of course. Display is everything also. A good base with ground cover or a well thought out dio is always and attention grabber.

Hope that helps. Of course Murphy's Law of Modeling states that no matter how impressive a model you take to a contest, someone else will always brign something even better!
