Number 1 guage is basicly "G guage" track with 1/32 scale equipment. Not to much North American equipment in that scale, but new stuff comes along all the time. Try searching the garden railroading and model railroan sites on the web to see what you can find. European equipment is definitely not suitable for use in North America.
Hardest part of building in 1/35 will be the part called the trucks (bogies in Europe) - the frames that hold the wheels and axles. They are cast steel and not really easily scratch built. If I had to I would do a master using an O-scale San Juan Engineering Proto-48 truck kit and cast duplicates of it in resin.
BTW, if you want to switch scales, buy a Tamiya 1/48 Sherman and a Red Caboose O-Guage flat car kit, and viola, you have your model. Add San Juan Engineering Proto-48 trucks for that extra touch.
