After reading all of the replies in this thread (including my own), I would like to make a final comment.
Build what you like and the way you like!
I would strongly recommend that you don't build to win competitions. When its all said and done, the model ends up in your display case so you've got to like it. I'm not saying that you shouldn't strive to improve your skills or try new things. But I am saying that modeling is first and foremost a hobby for enjoyment.
