Subject:  Re: Reviews - Too Many High RatingsList thread.

I think many reviewers are old enough to remember the quality of the kits -the state of the art- from the 1970s.In the back of my mind I almost always compare new kits to the style and detail that used to delight and satify me back in those days. I'm sure many can recall the short list of kits available at that time, before the big Tamiya boom began pushing the limits.By comparison many of todays kits-most of them-truely are great.

However the bar has been raised so new standards need to be set.
I would like to see an actual check list worked out and used for reviews.Various categories actually posted and examined. They could include fidelity of detail and scale and a 1-5 or 1-10 rating.
Finess of detail-were the small details smoothed over or left out?-and a rating.

Were short cuts taken that affected quality of build or overall appearence?-and a rating.
Is the kit overly worked and difficult to build?-ease of construction-and a rating.
Were the instructions fully thought out and clear?-and a rating.
Does the kit rate some merit due to its' rarity ,filling in a long standing void?-and a rating.
Does the kit represent a value for its price-will the average builder find the price worth the final product?-and a rating.
And finally a score based on all the categoies examined.

Im sure others will have various suggestions for a standard check list.-"First look"-"Out of Box Build"- "Detail Fever Mania review" etc.

Lastly I do value the reviewers' gut instinct feel for a kit and factor that into my decision to buy. An example of these vagueries
for me would be some of the East European kits. While they are not up to DML/Tamiya standards the vehicle types they represent earned a few points in my book.Tamiya and DML weren't likely to produce the T-28 or T-35, and while those kits werent perfect they were worth my time to build and I enjoyed them.

The art of the review is a tough one to master, but with an actual check list posted -a cummulative weight of score- and an area to address feelings good or bad about a kit might get us closer to the goal.
Here's my two cents and Hope this Helps....
