Subject:  Re: Reviews - Too Many High RatingsList thread.

I agree that perhaps removing the stars for inbox reviews would solve part of this trend. I do a lot of inbox reviews, and after I built the figure, the star-rating would go down due to the amount of work involved, fit problems, gaps, etc.

I normally give high ratings because since I buy a lot of modern figures, quite a few figures have no comparisions. For example, DML's Modern Marines are still one of the only plastic modern Marine offerings on market for at least over a year before Trumpeter's. So if DML's is say a "four-star kit" IMO, what would be a five-star plastic Marine? None will be ever made. If DML's plastic modern Marines were three-star, what would be four or five star kit? $10, $20, $30 more?

Then if we compare the DML plastic figures to resin, would DML go down in ratings, or should we compare resin-to-resin and plastic-to-plastic, or to the whole market?

I haven't done a review in a long while here, but does TL's drop-down rating menu have decimals such as 3.5 stars? There were many times I felt awarding half-a-star instead of rounding up to the next highest level. I didn't want to round down to three-stars because the kit wasn't "average," so I rounded up to 4-stars. Sometimes I say in my review text the kit is 3.5 stars, but when the header says 4-stars, what to believe? Also, since I'm verbose, saying 3.5 stars in the text might get lost.

Another solution would be for inbox reviews to have what some other reviewers say: "Recommended, Highly recomm., Not recomm., Don't waste your money, Fine, if you are a fan of the subject, So-so, etc." That way, the buyer doesn't see a star-rating and wonders if the model is compared to resin, but can see if he should buy or avoid. Perhaps a drop-down box of sayings for inbox reviews would be ideal.

Pete
